EMBRACING CULTURE AND HERITAGE
For more than 15 years, James has opened his home and his heart to children and young people who need care and is now caring for a young man through a Staying Put arrangement while he studies at university.
Over the years, James has cared for children from many different backgrounds and has always embraced their culture, heritage, and identity. He recalls how important it was for one young man of Greek heritage to stay connected to his traditions and family ties. James worked closely with his previous foster carer to make sure Greek celebrations and Sunday lunches remained part of his life, while also introducing him to James’ own Guyanese roots. It became a two-way exchange of cultures, strengthening their bond.
CELEBRATING YOUNG PEOPLE’S SUCCESSES
For James, the greatest reward has been seeing young people grow into confident adults, often exceeding expectations. One of his former foster sons, decided University was not for him, and is now running a successful barbershop business. Others are thriving at university and still come home for Christmas, birthdays, and family gatherings.
“Children may come to us with difficult experiences,” James reflects. “But with the right support, patience, and love, you can see them transform. They become part of your family, and that bond lasts long after they leave.”
CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES IN FOSTERING
As a Black, widowed, single male foster parent, James challenges outdated stereotypes about who can foster. His story is a powerful reminder that fostering is about compassion, resilience, and creating a safe space where children can belong and flourish.
This Black History Month, ISP is proud to celebrate foster parents like James, whose dedication and openness make a lasting difference in young people’s lives, showing that fostering truly takes a village.
